Benefits to ELL
It is easy for many to forget the not always is English the primary language spoken in your class. yes you may be speaking English but how many students understand or speak English at home. this demographic it can be argued is perhaps the fastest growing that we will see in our schools. So the question stands how can we help? While there are many instructional tools that can be used to help perhaps one of the best tools in EC are the centers.
Susan Verner argues that there are major benefits to the use of learning centers with ELL students. Students are able to as a group work on areas where they may feel weak, They are able to move at their own pace, they get one-on-one time with other students who may be English first speakers and they are able to creatively express their thoughts through a mode other than just language (Verner,ND). Centers are also adaptable to meet the needs of many students based on the resources we have placed at them. For example at the writing center a picture dictionary is good for both English and non- English speakers as they are able to look up an object and find the connected word.
