Importance of other cultural knowledge

Education for many is presented as a binary, teacher and students. This being said it is important to remember that there are many other ways of knowing and cultrues to intigrate into the classroom.

Through books we can explore the traditions of first nations groups but beyond that we can integrate these traditions into our classroom as a whole. For example in the Alberta curriculum there is a unit on environmental and community awareness. Who says we can’t teach alongside the traditional methods first nation understandings. Some of you may have noticed that in our list of dramatic play center the incorporation of traditional indigenous baby care materials. In your music centers incorporate examples of throat singing and drumming. Create art projects that reflect the communities around your classroom.
