Motor skills – Cutting, rolling, shaping, pressing, manipulating objects…

Literacy – Spelling, word shape, shape and action terminology (create a sphere, create a cube, roll, cut, press, flatten/squish), terminology for objects and features (for anything you make – anatomy, the shapes of object cookie cutters, parts of a house, or one of the many endless possibilities!)

Materials

Making your own play dough

Get the students to help you make the dough, measure the ingredients, and mix their own color creations!

  • 1 cup of flour
  • ¼ cup of salt
  • 1 Tbsp cream of tartar (optional)
  • ½ cup of warm water
  • 5 drops of natural food coloring (optional)
  • Glitter (optional)
  • Kool-Aid packets for scent (optional)

Playing

  • Letter or number/counting cards – form the dough in the shape different letters
  • Letter stamps – press into the play dough to practice the order of the alphabet or the spelling of words
  • Texture materials – have students find their own in nature or from the classroom
  • Rolling pins
  • Cookie cutters – shapes of animals, vehicle’s, etc.
  • Scissors/and other cutting tools
